How to connect Discord to AskVault

How the Discord bot works

Growth+

AskVault answers in Discord through a slash command. A member types /ask with their question, and the bot replies in the channel with an answer from your knowledge base, the same agent that runs your website widget.

The bot does not read ordinary messages, @-mentions or direct messages, so it never interrupts conversations it was not asked into.

Add to Discord in one click (rolling out)

Rolling out A one-click connection is built but not switched on yet. Once it is, you won't create a Discord application or paste a token:

  1. Open the Channels page in the AskVault dashboard, choose Discord and click Add to Discord.
  2. Discord asks which server to add AskVault to. Pick one you manage and click Authorize.
  3. You land back in AskVault with your server's name shown as connected.

Each Discord server connects to one AskVault agent. If the server is already connected to another agent, AskVault tells you instead of moving it. Disconnect removes AskVault from your server. Until one-click is on, and any time you want your own bot name and avatar, use the steps below.

Set it up

  1. Create an application. In the Discord Developer Portal, create a new application and add a bot to it.
  2. Copy three values. From General Information, copy the Application ID and Public Key. From Bot, reset and copy the bot token.
  3. Paste them into AskVault. Open the Discord channel settings in AskVault and paste all three. AskVault checks them and registers the /ask command for you.
  4. Set the Interactions Endpoint URL. AskVault shows an endpoint URL. Paste it into Interactions Endpoint URL on the application's General Information page in Discord and save. Discord checks the URL straight away.
  5. Invite the bot. Open the invite link AskVault shows and pick your server.
  6. Test it. In your server, type /ask and a question your content covers.

No privileged Gateway intents are needed.

What members see

  • /ask question: followed by their question.
  • A short "thinking" state while the answer is prepared.
  • The answer in the channel.

Limits

  • One command. /ask is the only command.
  • No mentions or DMs. The bot only responds to /ask.
  • Text answers. No embeds or file attachments.

Common pitfalls

Discord rejects the Interactions Endpoint URL. Check you pasted the Public Key from the same application into AskVault, then try again.

/ask does not appear. The bot has not been invited to the server, or Discord has not refreshed the command list yet. Reinvite with AskVault's link and reload Discord.

The bot replies that it cannot help. Your knowledge base does not cover the question. Add the content, or check the agent's answers in the chat playground.
