Get started with AskVault - build an AI support agent in 5 minutes
Before you start
You need two things and nothing else.
- Your website address, or a few PDFs and Word files.
- Access to your site's HTML or theme settings, to paste the script tag.
There is no flow to design and no prompt to write; AskVault reads your content and answers from it.
Not sure what AskVault is yet? Read what is AskVault first.
Step 1: create your account
Go to askvault.co/signup and sign up with your work email or with Google. Email signups get a verification link; Google signups skip that step.
You start on the Free plan: 50 messages a month, 1 workspace, 5 MB of indexed content, the website widget and a hosted chat page. It has no end date. Details are in login and signup.
Want it done for you? Click "Finish setting up my agent" and the Setup Copilot handles the widget, chat link and branding, asking you to approve each change.
Step 2: add your content
Pick whichever matches what you have.
Crawl your website. Open Knowledge > Add Source > Web Crawler, choose Domain Crawl, paste your homepage URL and click Start Crawl. AskVault finds your pages through your sitemap, and each page becomes answerable as soon as it is indexed.
Upload files. Open Knowledge > Add Source > Document Upload and drag in PDFs, text or Markdown files. Word files arrive on Starter, and spreadsheets and slides on Business. Each file shows its status and is answerable once it reads Ready. See file uploads.
Add only certain pages. In the Web Crawler, switch to Exact Links and paste up to 50 page URLs, one per line. Useful when you want the help center indexed but not the blog. See URL crawling.
Step 3: put the widget on your site
Open Channels > Web widget and copy your script tag. It looks like this:
<script src="https://api.askvault.co/widget.js" data-token="YOUR_TOKEN" async></script>Paste it just before </body> and publish. On WordPress use a custom HTML block, on Shopify add it to theme.liquid, and on a React app put it in index.html. Step-by-step guides: WordPress, Shopify, React.
Colors, position and the welcome message are set in Channels > Web widget > Customize.
Step 4: test with real questions
Open the widget on your site, or use the chat playground in the dashboard, and ask the questions your customers ask most. For each answer, check three things:
- It cites a source, and the source is the right page.
- It uses your wording and numbers, not generic advice.
- When you ask something your content does not cover, it says it does not know.
If an answer is thin, the fastest fix is a Q&A pair with the exact answer you want.
What to do next
- Reach customers on WhatsApp or Telegram. Both connect from Channels on the Growth plan. See WhatsApp setup and Telegram setup.
- Turn on handoff. Enable the live chat inbox so the agent can pass a conversation to a person.
- Add skills. On Growth and up, lead capture, order status and demo booking are a toggle away in skills.
- Recognise logged-in customers with identity verification.

Common first-hour problems
The crawl only found a login page. The site is behind a login. Upload the content as files, or switch to Exact Links and add a session cookie under Advanced options > Cookies. Cookies work only with Exact Links, not with a whole-site crawl.
Answers are vague. There is not enough content on that topic. Add a few Q&A pairs for your most common questions and test again.
The widget does not show up. The script tag is in the wrong place or blocked by a Content Security Policy. Open your browser's developer tools and look for errors mentioning widget.js.
An idle test workspace got paused. Free workspaces with no conversations for 21 days are paused, and can be removed at 30 idle days, at least 9 days after the pause notice. Send a test message now and then to keep one. See Free plan rules.
FAQ
Do I need a credit card?
No. The Free plan needs no card and has no time limit.
How long does indexing take?
It depends on the size and speed of your site. Pages become answerable one at a time, so you can start testing early.
Can AskVault use pages behind a login?
Yes. Upload them as files, or add the exact pages with Exact Links and a session cookie (a whole-site crawl ignores cookies and is refused if you send them), and mark internal sources with the audience setting so they stay off public channels.
What happens when my content changes?
Click Resync in the Knowledge page to re-read changed pages. Paid plans can set a re-crawl schedule, and automatic re-crawl by default is rolling out; see keeping website knowledge up to date.
Where do I see which source an answer used?
Open the conversation in Inbox > Chat History and click the citation under the answer.
