AskVault vs Intercom Fin (2026) - flat fee vs per-outcome pricing
The short answer
Choose AskVault when you want an AI support agent with a fixed monthly cost and no seat math. Choose Intercom Fin when your team already runs Intercom's inbox, help center and ticketing, because Fin plugs straight into all of it.
The two products answer customer questions from your content in much the same way. What separates them is how you pay, and how much other software you have to buy to get there.
How the pricing models differ
Intercom figures were read from Intercom's pricing page and Fin's pricing page on 2026-10-24. AskVault figures come from the live AskVault pricing page.
| Intercom Fin | AskVault | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Per outcome, plus a per-seat platform fee | Flat monthly fee with a capped message allowance |
| AI charge | $0.99 per outcome ($9.99 per sales qualification) | None per conversation |
| Platform fee | Essential $29 per seat per month list, $19 for new customers; Advanced $85, Expert $132 | None; the plan price is the whole cost |
| Using it without the vendor's help desk | Fin-only, 50-outcome monthly minimum | No minimum |
| Entry cost | $19 to $29 per seat per month plus usage | $39/mo Starter: 2,000 messages, 15 MB, 2 workspaces |
| Mid plan | Depends on seats and outcome volume | $99/mo Growth: 6,000 messages, 40 MB, 5 workspaces, 4 seats |
| See Intercom's pricing page | Included from Growth (on your own WhatsApp Business account) | |
| Bill predictability | Rises with outcome volume | Fixed; the allowance is capped, never overaged |
AskVault prices are month-to-month and exclude tax, which Dodo Payments, our merchant of record, shows at checkout.
Why predictability matters more than the sticker price
Per-outcome pricing has an odd property: the better the agent works, the bigger the bill. A Fin deployment that resolves 300 conversations in a quiet month and 1,200 in a busy one swings by roughly $890 on outcome fees alone, before seats. That is fine if your budget flexes. It is a problem if someone has to approve a fixed number every quarter.
AskVault's allowance is a hard cap. When a workspace reaches it you buy a top-up pack or move up a plan, and nothing is ever billed behind your back.
A fair warning about comparing units
A Fin outcome and an AskVault message are not the same thing. One outcome covers a whole conversation; one message is a single AI reply, and a conversation usually takes several. Anyone who quotes a single "X times cheaper" figure across those units is overselling, us included. Take your real monthly conversation count, multiply by your average number of AI replies, and compare the result to each plan.
Channels and what you have to buy
AskVault is one package with no platform to buy first.
It includes the agent, a website widget, a hosted chat page, the knowledge base and, from Growth, a live chat inbox for human handoff. From Growth, the same agent also answers on WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, SMS and email. WhatsApp and SMS run on your own WhatsApp Business and Twilio accounts, so Meta and Twilio bill message fees to you directly.
Fin is at its best inside Intercom's messenger. Intercom bills outbound WhatsApp and SMS per message, and phone per number and per minute, on top of the plan (Intercom: usage-based channels). That article lists the WhatsApp and SMS rates, and inbound WhatsApp is free.
Where Intercom Fin is the better choice
- You already pay for Intercom. Fin reads your existing Help Center articles and sits on the inbox your team knows. Unpicking that rarely pays off.
- You need the whole suite. Intercom bundles live chat, support email, in-app messages, banners and tooltips with deep ticketing, and its plans include them without a message cap.
- Low volume. At 100 outcomes a month, $99 of AI fees is hard to beat, and a conversation passed to your team without an outcome is not charged.
- Published benchmarks and scale. Fin publishes resolution rates and has large deployments behind them. AskVault has no public reference customers yet, and you should weigh that.
- A more mature help desk. Intercom's reporting, workflows and admin controls run deeper than ours today.
Where AskVault is the better choice
- A fixed monthly bill with no per-seat charges and no per-outcome fees.
- No platform purchase. You get the agent, widget, inbox and knowledge base without signing up for a customer messaging suite.
- Messaging channels in one plan. WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord and SMS are part of Growth at $99/mo with no AskVault surcharge; Meta and Twilio bill their message fees to you directly.
- Several brands or clients. Growth includes 5 workspaces and Business 15, each with its own knowledge base and widget.
- Visible grounding. Answers cite their sources by default, answers are checked against your content, and on Growth and up unsupported or low-confidence ones are flagged into a Needs Review queue. See AI safety.
Moving from Fin to AskVault
- Point AskVault at your help center. Paste the help center URL into onboarding and articles become answerable as they are indexed.
- Add the rest of your content such as PDFs, policy pages and Q&A pairs.
- Run both side by side for a week, with Intercom on some pages and AskVault on others, and compare answers on real questions.
- Swap the snippet once you are happy. If you use identity verification, set up AskVault's HMAC verification with a new secret.
AskVault cannot run inside the Intercom messenger today, so the two stay separate chat surfaces during a trial run.
FAQ
Is AskVault a cheaper alternative to Intercom Fin?
At steady or high volume it usually is, and it is easier to budget because there are no seat or per-outcome fees. At low volume Fin can cost less.
Do I need Intercom to use an AI support agent?
No. AskVault includes its own widget, hosted page and knowledge base, plus an inbox from Growth.
Is Fin more accurate than AskVault?
We have no evidence either way. Fin publishes benchmarks; AskVault does not yet. Every AskVault answer shows its sources, so you can audit it yourself on your own questions.
What happens when I hit my AskVault allowance?
The agent stops using AI credits for the month until you buy a top-up pack or upgrade. You are never billed past your plan.
